What Gear To Get...?

Hi all -

I plan on recording 2 shows by Mount Eerie on the upcoming UK tour. The shows are going to be solo, and likely acoustic - the artist is taper-friendly and the venue is small enough for me to get up close to the stage. The gigs are on the 23rd and 24th of May, so I need to get this gear pretty soon. Whilst I'd love great sound quality, I'm not looking for it to be absolutely pin-drop perfect, so I don't think I need really high end stuff - just standard live recording quality. I guess I would be willing to spend up to about £250 on equipment, but I would go slightly higher if needed. Also, I make experimental music, and I'm looking to do some field recordings so I'd ideally like a setup that would be suitable to use for this afterwards.

I know the Minidisc is easy to choose (an MZ-M100 or NHF800, I guess? I use a Mac, so whichever has the best intergration) but the microphone is the thing that's really confuses me. What do you fine folk recommend?

Many thanks!

EDIT: Sorry if I should have put this inside the similar thread below, but I just thought that with it being a different music style I'm recording, and different budget, a new topic would have been best

The only models with some compatibility with the Mac are the MZ-M100 , MZ-M10 (limited to PCM uploading) and the RH1. The features of the new software for the RH1 are still unknown, but should better than what the others models offer, and it will likely not be available until later in the year ...

In any case, an HiMD would still provide more capacity and/or better quality.

I suggest you borrow a recorder from a friend for the May 23 shows and wait for the RH1.

The NHF800 is only PC-compatible.

The current Mac-compatible models, M100 and M10, are very limited in their compatibility. You need to record PCM, which gives you a maximum of 90 minutes per disc, if you want to upload to your Mac. The RH1--still not on the market in English-speaking countries--is supposed to have more options for Mac users.

For microphones, look at this thread:
