Recorded in left speaker only?

Hi,

I recorded a show last night and the sound only came through on the left ear. My minidisc recorder is a Sony MZN-707. I am using a SONY ECM-DS70P stereo microphone.

This is the second time this has happened.

I am curious as the manual says it will record with the left side when using a mono microphone. However, my mic is a stereo mic.

I turned down the recording volume at the beginning of the show. Would this cause this reaction?

Any suggestions?

Also, any suggestions on if I can duplicate the sound to the right side on my disc?

Cheers,

Chris

Try a test,

Throw a disc in to your recorder, and make sure the record mode is not set to mono. Then throw some headphones on, and hit record with the mic just picking up sounds in your house. If the mic is working correctly, the mic should replace your ears, and both channels will correspond with both of your ears.

If it is not working, you'll hear something in the left channel only.

Also, Make sure that if you used any other equipment, that it is stereo as well. If you used extra cabling to extend the mic, that could be mono, or any battery boxes/pre amps. It's always good to check those things before looking in to a hardware problem.

Look for this on the plug:

The contacts for the mic-input may be dirty/corroded, the same thing happened to my 707 after a couple years. To test this do a test recording as bananatree mentions, but while recording twist the mic-plug around a bit. Chances are you will hear the sound cut out on one or both sides, or it will just get crackly.

Alternately the mic's plug itself may be dirty/corroded.

I'm not quite sure what the best method to clean them would be though... Perhaps someone else can chime in? I know I've seen it mentioned here before.
