Cannot record or play

I'm getting this message "Cannot record or play" on the display of my new MZ-RH910. This has happened 3 times, using 2 different disks, when I'm recording with Atrac3plus. When I re-format the disc all is ok - except that I've lost the music. As this is my 1st minidisc player I dont know if the problem is with me or the player or the software. Any help is appreciated.
