Scratchy noise when recording bars are max

Hi,

I have a Sony Hi MD.

I have a SONY ECM-DS70P Condenser Stereo Microphone I used for live recording of rock bands.

I noticed when I often record, the volume bars are maxed out. I turn down the recording volume but this only seems to record the same input with less volume. I want to limit some of the input volume.

I tend to get a scratchy noise when the vocals or guitars are too loud for the microphone.

What products would anyone recommend to limit the volume and eliminate the scratchy noise?
