Hello everyone,

I currently have a few old MD recorders and more importantly I have a MDX-CA580 in the car.

I am looking at buying a Hi-MD portable recording device (MZ-NH900).

I know that my car stereo will not be able to play Hi-MD format discs. BUT I want to download some music from my computer to MD, will I be able to record these in a format that my car stereo will be able to play?

Thanks a lot for helping a newbie!

Mike...

Hi Mike,

Welcome to the forums!

Short answer to your question... Yes.

You will need the latest version of Sony's SonicStage software (currently 4.2.. links are in the forums if you run a search). You will be able to transfer music to standard MiniDiscs in either LP2, LP4 or SP* formats. The MDX-CA580 as far as I know will only handle SP/MONO discs. You can do SP* with SonicStage (see below), but you will only be able to fit 80min on a disc...

* SP "compatibility" for older units actually transferrs the song as LP2 quality (~132kbps) but with an SP container. True SP is higher quality (~292kbps) but you are unable to transfer in this "True SP" using SonicStage.

Hope this helps some.

Thanks, that was a quick response!

Another quicky, is the same thing possible when recording on a MZ-N710 unit and playing back in the car.

I know it is not Hi-MD but like you said I think the MDX-CA580 will only play SP discs (although it does use ATRAC).

Thanks again, Mike...

Yes, the MZ-N710 is a NetMD recorder and you would want to use the same Sonicstage software to transfer the tracks. You should have no problems creating discs with either of those units that will playback in your car,

Edit: To be honest, if you wanted True SP quality, you could always record in realtime using the line/optical input on either recorder. SP compatibility via SonicStage would be quicker and easier though.
