Beginner MZ-M10 Question

Okay, so I know I must be missing something simple and vital here, but the keyword is "vital". I just got an MZ-M10 with the condenser mike and everything. I got it specifically for the microphone, as what I need this thing for is making recodings on the go. Now, the manual they put in the box is no good (it never is) and I've figured out how to put file from my computer onto the disk and all, but I can't get it to record live from the mic.

It's detecting the mic. I pressed record and pause at the same time (like the book says to test the levels) and that works fine, but to record, it says to press the JOG button (the one that rolls?) and record, and thats it. In the manual its a two step process. But when I do it, it tells me "no track". This is with a blank HI MD disk in. When a HIMD is in with files on it is in, it tell me "cannot overwrite" or something like that, which makes sense. "No track seems to be the message it gives me whenever I do something it doesn't like.

Anyway, I hope there is somebody out there with this device that can tell me what I'm doing wrong.

When you're getting levels and the display is blinking (which means it's paused), push Pause again to un-pause. Blinking should stop, timer should start counting up and you should be recording.

After that, pushing Track during recording will start a new track without stopping the recording (gapless). Pushing Pause during recording will pause and start a new track (also gapless, but no recording while paused.) Pushing Stop will save the data.
