SS4.2 / Linux anyone (Vmware / WINE)

Just messing around with SUSE 10.2 and the beta version of vmware workstation version 6 -- fixes USB mount problem and allows USB 2.0 amongst other things.

SS 4.2 runs 100% perfectly on workstation in a Windows VM.

To avoid the overhead of running a VM (and another copy of Windows --however since the VM BIOS has pretty standard features you can "poodle fake" Windows into thinking it's running on the same machine even though you are running it on different machines -- avoids the Re-activation problem if you want to test different features on different machines) I was wondering if anybody had got SS worling via WINE.

In theory it should be do-able as WINE actually uses the Windows Binaries. It's actually quite amazing what WINE can run --amazed people have that much time to spend doing that sort of stuff but I'm glad they do as we can all benefit.

Cheers

I've tried both Qemu and Wine under Ubuntu Linux. With wine, SS installation process only starts if you use the full install package either off a CD or from these forums. It then complains about a missing DLL (which I found and copied into the Wine directories). Once the installation process starts, it gives an error message complaining about the wrong version of Windows even though I have tried all configurations in Wine (Win98 to WinXP). I have checked the Wine website and they have been unable to get SS to run either. This is a known issue with Wine and a solution doesn't appear to have been found.

Under Qemu, I loaded Win98SE and then installed SS4.3 off the web. SS will start and everything works fine until you plug in the Minidisc unit into the USB port. SS sees the MD unit but it slows down the emulation so much that you can barely move the cursor. From this point, nothing works and you can only recover the emulator by unplugging the MD unit from the USB port.

From all the searching I have done, only VMware seems to allow SS to work properly.
