biber
Forgive me for posting this again as a new topic, but I'm a little leery of downloading an updated version of SonicStage (I currently have 3.0, which came with my HiMD, but everyone seems to agree that it's fairly useless). Should I uninstall the old version first? Will downloading a new one do anything to previously transferred sound files, and/or risk mucking up the file transferring/CD burning functions on my computer? raintheory
First remove DRM from your files by following the instructions in this thread: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=16088Then uninstall and reinstall either 3.4, or 4.2 (4.3 if you have Vista). If you don't remove the DRM on your files first, you run the risk of not being able to play them or transfer them when you uninstall/reinstall. Removing DRM prevents any problems.Download Links3.4 : http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=118894.2 : http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=17769 Edited August 1, 2007 by raintheory
biber
Actually, I've already used SoundForge to edit and save (as wav files) the sound I transferred from my HiMD, so I'm wondering if the SonicStage DRM issue applies. I guess before I do anything else, I could test the play/transfer thing by putting the sound onto a thumbstick and seeing if I can open and play it on another computer.Good to know that once I've established this, I should uninstall the old version of SonicStage before downloading the new. raintheory
Yeah if they're WAV, you're fine.
A440
I was just idly wondering if the File Conversion Tool existed in 3.0, or if it was added later. I have always backed up My Library (with the Backup Tool, not just copying it) when upgrading SonicStage. But I think I only had to restore from that backup once, and that was because I tried to change the location of My Library from the default. Now whenever I install SS I just leave the defaults. The crucial reason to upgrade from 3.0 is that in (I think) version 3.2 and above, you no longer only had one chance to upload your recordings. Before that--I think even with 3.0--you got one chance to upload, and if you tried to do it again for any reason, SonicStage ERASED THE ORIGINAL FROM THE DISC. Nasty. So please upgrade to at least 3.4 as soon as you can.

With 4.0, has the danger of that gone away? What can I do to make sure my audio doesn't get vaporized?

If you want to be extra careful you could always playback the disc using SonicStage and record the audio in realtime using Audacity or some other audio editing software prior to actually uploading..
