vore
My new NH700 just broke down. Will not play or turn off when It's on. I don't get it. I removed a disc and inserted a different one and all it does is whirl. It sound like its trying to find the beginning of the disc to play. One minute is was perfectly fine and the next minute it was broke.I tried everything IE: Inserted a different disc, turned off the unit removed the battery and pressed play to clear the capacitor, tried it with AC connected. Even held the unit between my knees and clucked like a chicken.Had this less than a month...Never dropped or mistreated. Anyone have the same problem with this model. I'm very upset! Avrin
Looks like a real problem, but let it lie without the battery and AC supply for an hour, for a start. If this does not solve the problem, a good service-center will be good.
A440
If it's newly purchased it is still under warranty. You will definitely need a receipt to prove that, since it is an old model. I hope you have one--if you do, get in touch with Sony immediately.

If this does not solve the problem, a good service-center will be good.I let it sit overnight with no power connected....still not playing. I went to the Sony sight. This model no is from Canada. It does not exist in the US. Kind of strange. If it's newly purchased it is still under warranty. You will definitely need a receipt to prove that, since it is an old model. vore
In a last ditch effort to get my MD working I hooked it up to my computer this morning using the USB port, (no battery) using Sonicstage. I inserted a minidisc with recordings on it and the machine started to whirl away unlike the repeated soft clicking with my last attempts. It listed all the selections on the disc and I was able to listen to the recordings in the headphones. It was playing the disc.I disconnected the cable, shut the unit off inserted a battery and a disc, and low and behold it's working again. I don't know what the USB port connection had to do with the mechanism being stuck. When the unit failed to read a disc initially, it wasn't connected to my computer. Whatever it was the player is working again.
Avrin
Looks like it was a serious glitch, but with a really unusual happy end!Still, I wouldn't trust the unit for anything serious.
vore
Looks like it was a serious glitch, but with a really unusual happy end!Still, I wouldn't trust the unit for anything serious.I'm still wondering what it was in the USB connection that fixed the locked up mechanism. And how often this might have happened to other users. I was all prepared to send it to Sony.
Avrin
My theory is that the USB connection switches the unit to the USB mode, restarting the internal program and re-initializing some registers (which are not reset even after keeping the unit unpowered for a prolonged period of time). Then, after the USB connection is removed, the unit is again restarted and re-initialized in the normal mode.

Then, after the USB connection is removed, the unit is again restarted and re-initialized in the normal mode. That makes a whole lot of sense. I wonder if this might be a quick fix for other units with similiar problems. I've had the unit playing, recording, editing and I reconnected it to the USB port. There are no problems with it. It's been working fine.
