When I press thr record thingy the red light does not stayon but it does reord just the same.2.There is a huge amount of noise and distortion.I am recording from a record player via a line in connection. First thing to do is try it with a different source and make sure the problem isn't the record player. Do you have a CD player, radio, etc., that you can connect to line-in?
