microkid
I have a Sony MDS-JE510 deck which I use in my band to play pre-recorded sequences. It has performed flawlessly Since I bought it in 1997. However the other day I switched it on and was greeted by a 'DISC ERROR' message.I have tried several Discs and all result in the same ' DISC ERROR' message. When I insert a disc I see the usually READING TOC message this remains for maybe 20-30 seconds then the disc error message appears.Does anyone have any ideas or should i just junk it? kino170878
Get another one. 10 years of hard use it's served you well, now it's time to move onto a new deck.
KJ_Palmer
A disc cleaner might help, if the lens has got a dust build-up.

The most notable defect was self-turn-on, which often led to worse problems. I had a 510 that eventually died that way. Your DISC ERROR message may well mean the deck is done for. I think you're lucky it's lasted this long. I had about the same thing happen on an MDS-JB940. I tried all sorts of stuff, including sending it to Sony. Finally I just replaced it. You might want to start thinking about a new deck. Plenty of 510s on Ebay for low $$, if that's the model you want.
microkid
I took the 510 apart last night. After loading a disc it appears it does not spin. I assume the disc needs to spin in order for any data including the TOC to be read?Any ideas?
kino170878
You could always send it to Sony. The price will be much higher than buying another secondhand off ebay though.
