Hi to everybody there,

i have "trouble" with converting Wav to Lossless. When i import Wav to My Library i want made lossless compression, but SS4.3 (on Vista) make lossless with 256k automatically.

But i want 352, like with importing from CD exactly, theres possibility made Lossless with 352k.

Anybody any idea ???

Thanx before, Jirka

PS. Sorry for my english :new_russian:

After checking the registry, I was unable to find any way to change the bitrate for the "Lossless Compression" function to anything other than 256 kbit/s. There is simply no such parameter.

But, while checking the registry, I have actually found some useful parameter tweaks for other functions: http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=21401 and http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=21402.

Hi all -- call me possibly obtuse but if it is being compressed to LOSSLESS why should it make ANY difference what the bit rate is (other than perhaps creating smaller files).

If the compression is truely lossless then even 15 kbs would be OK - if it were possible to achieve lossless at that low bitrate.

cheers

ATRAC Lossless is a scalable compression codec. This means that a file contains both the core, compressed audio stream, as well as information about the residual data lost in the compression. Therefore, it makes no difference what bitrate you compress the file at. A lower bitrate will simple mean more residual data. The sound will be exactly the same (ie. lossless) regardless.

The advantage of this is that you should theoretically be able to play back the 'core' part of the stream on any ATRAC device, although I have not personally tested this.

I have tried this a few times and it works as advertised. Overall, the file size may be a little smaller than the original...but not much (if any).

The bottom line seems to be that this is a feature mainly for those that plan to use Sony portable devices, yet want a pure file on the HD...otherwise you might as well keep your files in WAV or whatever original format.
