a2themfk
I been using the hd5 now going on 4 years, every since reading the review on abi. Excellent sounding player so much so i own 3 of them. 1 kept in work, 1 linked to my sony headunit with full controls and charging and one linked to my sony av amp in the house. The only let down is SS software i find it easily enough to use but upgrading pc's etc is a pain. Ive gone down the road of ripping all my cd's to an external hd in both flac for future use and mp3 vbr 160 mbps for dumping into SS. I thought i could install the SS software to that Hd aswell and it would also store the files, but ive found that i can use the hd to install the ss sofware but any music files end up on my laptops hd. Is there a way round this, ive tried twice now thinking there was a custom install but still end up with the SS software on the hd and the imported files on my laptops HD. Thing is ive a shed load of music ripped and downloaded in mp3 format 100gb + to install into SS that i was hoping to have on that hd and only use it for SS. any pointers Cheers D

Avrin
Some SonicStage components (including OpenMG and drivers) are always installed to disk C:, so it is useless to try installing it to a portable drive. But you can configure SonicStage to rip CDs to an external drive (Tools->Options->Location to save imported files), but make sure copy protection is not added. You may then import your music files from the external hard drive to any installation of SonicStage, as long as they are not copy-protected. This is not very convenient, but seems like the only option.

Cheers on the point of copy protection is that thru ss or on the cd itself ? ive ripped all my cd's using dBpoweramp cd ripper to the external hd first, i dont think there is copy protection on the ripped mp3's but how would i check ? Avrin
I was talking about copy protection that SonicStage adds to all ripped CDs by default. Just uncheck the respective box. MP3 files made by other software are most probably not protected. SonicStage shows whether copy protection is "available", in track properties.
