xboxmods
I've recently become interested in MiniDisc and I have no experience with the format. I've looked around the forums and figured out MDLP, HiMD, NetMD and all of that stuff, but I'm trying to pick an ideal player. $50 is about all I have to spend right now, I'm willing to wait for a deal on a player, but please no recommendations more than $10-15 outside of my guidelines. I'm looking for a a player with good sound quality a screen that shows track info, and an optical in port. If this can't be done for $50 then please list what you would recommend instead. I could care less about a remote, so if I can find one for sale without a remote that should make it a bit less expensive. Thanks!
xboxmods
Disregard this post. I had bid on an N707 and was promptly outbid, however, the highest bidder chose to retract their bid moments from auction closing which resulted in me winning. I'm not sure if this is the model I was looking for or not, but I'm somewhat stuck with it now. Hopefully it will be what I'm expecting. EDIT: It didn't come with an optical cable so I'm wondering exactly what cable I'm looking for and if it can be found at monoprice or the like, thanks! KJ_Palmer
Hi. For most optical digital sources (CD deck, PC soundcard, DAC etc) you'd need a mini-TOSLink optical cable, such as this. The long thin end would go into the N707's optical in jack (shared with its line in), the other square end to the source. Portable equipment with optical outputs (some CD players,MP3 players, soundcards?) may need a mini-mini optical cable like this one. Those these are comparatively rare. Hope that helps
Azureal
The 707 is a great unit. I have one I bought new in 2002 and it still works perfectly. It should be a perfect unit to get you in to the format. You can pick up a cable for no more than $10 on eBay, Radio Shack or Best Buy. The plug that goes in to the MD is not a standard TOS-Link style plug however so make sure you get one with the 6mm or 1/8" on one end. Check out minidisc.org for a 707 hack which allows you to add some great firmware functionality by tweaking a couple of settings in the units service mode. Have fun with it!
