My VGN-AR71S has intermittent blue screen crashes caused by errors in the HDD controller (according to the system log files). The disks themselves do not seem to have any significant problems - according to CrystalDiskInfo.
I have no particular need for the RAID-1 mode in which the VAIO now operates. And I guess that if I take the notebook to a repairshop, the only thing they can realistically do is to replace the motherboard - which is going to be way too expensive given the age of the notebook.
So I am thinking about replacing the two 250 GB HDD's by a single 500 GB disk, and see if the thing runs better in single-disk mode. Has anyone in the forum done this - with success?
I have not been able to get access to the RAID controller settings, to set or deactivate RAID mode. Any suggestions for this?
Your sugguestions will be much appreciated, I can check this approach by trial and error, but building on earlier experience would be much better
