tinner
Hi everyone first post here. Ive just bought a second hand sony mz rh1 it came with just a usb cable and headphones and remote. No power supply/charger or battery or software or manual. Ive ordered a power supply online. The question is ive tried connecting the unit to my pc via usb but the unit seems dead and the pc dont recognize it. Ive tried pressing all the buttons on the md unit to turn it on lol but alas still nothing. What do I do next? Cheers.
hobby30plus
It should work without battery, it can be powered via USB. If everything is OK, "Walkman" should appear on left screen, and unit should work as USB drive then, displaying "Hi-MD" on the left and a row of 9 dots on the right screen. Maybe there's something wrong with USB cable or your USB socket - maybe it doesn't give DC 5V 800 mA to the unit, try checking your power scheme settings. I hope your RH1 isn't broken, check if it works as soon as the battery or power supply arrives.
Azureal
The maximum current sourced from a USB 2.0 bus powered port is 500mA and that is only if the unit is enumerated to ask for that much current, the default is only 100mA which may be your issue, since there is no battery, the device is not recognized and cannot enumerate properly to request the additional power. Your best bet is to use a wall power adapter which provides a full Amp and you will be able to run it, if it is working. Do you have any USB power adapters, like for and iPhone, or other USB phone, iPad, Kindle or other device? I have nearly a dozen such adapters around my house leaching power at any given time :-) Check this link for details: USB Spec
Azureal
So, I tested this on the computer I am using by removing the battery and plugging the unit into a USB port. I did not have the driver installed but Windows 7 64 bit did recognize the device as a NetMD and looked for a driver. I downloadad the driver from here in the forums and loaded it, I had to unplug and replug the unit in and it was then recognized and powered up. The issue with this is that it places the unit into "connected mode" and you can only transfer to and from it in this mode. One other difference I have on this computer is that the USB ports are all SS USB 3.0 which may have different capabilities with regards to sourcing power to devices. Placing a battery into the unit shows it charging.
Azureal
Sorry for the multiple posts, I tested again with another computer which has the drivers already installed and also has regular USB 2.0 ports. With no battery and no disk the unit was recognized and said "No Disk" on the display as well as "HiMD". It did not show as a Mass Storage device in Windows Explorer. I inserted an album recorded using NetMD LP2 on an 80 minute standard MD and it recognized it without issue. Opening SonicStage allowed me to view the contents of the disk. All of this without a battery in the unit and sourcing power from a standard USB 2.0 port. Placing a battery in the unit started the charging process, although it was fully charged from being plugged in on the other machine. I suggest you run a few tests and if you cannot get it to work, you should contact the seller and find out what they are going to do for you ... tinner
Hi everbody, Firstly id like to thank Azureal and Losio for their help, thanks guys. I got it working now, without the battery. I took your advice. The power supply has not arrived yet, the unit powered up tho when I hooked it up using my iphone charging plug! I then installed the drivers and sonic stage ultimate edition from this great site, the unit then powered up via USB. I just got to read the downloaded instruction manual and figure out how to use sonicstage now :-) I might get a battery although no plans to use this recorder outside.. so will wait and see if I can pick up a bargain. Thanks again, and good to find this great site.
Azureal
That's great news tinner! I personally find SonicStage to be a very usable program for managing my library of music. Many others here do as well. I think you'll like it.
