Sony NWA-1000 with Windows 98

Pretty uphappy with my NWA-1000 tbh, after being in my pocket around 4 times dust has already got inbetween the keys and screen. I tried to take it back (because its such a pain to put songs on as well) and the sony centre were having none of it (even though they said I could take it back if I didnt use the headphones, which I hadn't). Anyway seems like im stuck with it now so have to use it , anyway my laptop is being fixed and the only computer left in the house runs on windows 98. Question is can I transfer songs onto my NWA-1000 using this computer? Sonicstage CP runs fine and it can read the NWA-1000 but when I come to transfer a track it comes up with transfer not allowed or something like that? How can I overcome this problem, if I even can

The sony centre also told me there is a drag and drop feature I can use, just like using a data stick, is this even true?

Out of all the sony stuff iv owned this is definatly the most disappointing, my Playstation and PS2 are both still going strong (dispite being modified hehe), the psp is fantastic (GTA in my hands! And I got mine for £50!) and my minidisc has been bulletproof despite taking knocks from the normal school day

Did you transfer anything onto the player from the laptop before it went in to service? If so, that is probably why you are unable to transfer new material onto the player, since there is music on it that was previously transfered from a different computer.

To get it to work, you will need to format the player (Home => Settings => Initialize Disk)

Afterwards, try transfering music again. It should work this time.

Have you registered for the Connect website? I'm not sure how sony's connect works in other parts of the world, but for connect USA, once you set up an account (FREE) with them, you can use the same login for 5 computers, and then you can transfer music onto the player with those 5 computers. Again, I don't know how sony's connect site is structured for the rest of the world, but for the USA, this holds true.

If the Connect site in your country does the same, register your current computer to the site, and then register the laptop when you get it back. You can then transfer music to the player using both computers.

Yeh I put the old music on using my laptop, I didn't use connect however as it crashes the laptop heavily and only operated well in safe mode. I found sonic stage to be a little better so used that instead and sonic stage is compatible with windows 98 as with connect is not. I did not want to do Initialize Disk as I would lose all curent songs on the mp3 (which took ages to put on) and im not sure if I can transfer songs to the nwa-1000 using windows 98

Also if this is the case once I get my laptop back won't I have to delete all the songs again? Because il want to use the laptop to transfer songs not this win98 PC.

Hey Hpi_matrix_stock,

Unfortunately, the only way you can get music onto your player is to either format the player or wait until you get your laptop back. I had not realized before that in some places, sonicstage is one account to one computer (instead of up to 5pcs like in the USA).

Since you don't want to format, you will have to wait until you get your laptop back in order to add additional songs onto the player.

P.S. Did you transfer the songs as ATRAC or as MP3s? If it was mp3, it shouldnt have taken that long, since it just wraps the mp3 in DRM and then transfers over to player (instead of reconverting them).

How can I transfer them as straight mp3's? Iv always converted them...

Also is there a drag and drop feature?

Hey Hpi_matrix_stock,

Changing the settings to have it transfer straight MP3s is pretty simple.

While in the transfer mode, click the button that looks like a suitcase.

Afterwards, click on the bubble corresponding to "Standard transfer mode"

then press ok, and start transfering

As far as simple drag and dropping, there are a few applications that can do it. I havn't run into any problems with SonicStage, so I havn't tried using any of them. Go check the downloads section of this forum, ana use the search feature and look up other threads about them
