Got no idea, since i never did that trick with either the D-NE1 or the D-NE20..

However, you should realise that the 'backpack', aka the belt battery holder, is intended to extend the running time of a deck, not replace the internal cells.

Now i have never taken one of these D-NE's apart, but i highly suspect that it's been electrically wired to expect to find a circuit across both the ni-mh 'gumstick' cell compartment as well as the ext pack when the ext pack is connected.

After all, consider this - if you have both connected, the estimated running time left (in terms of battery endurance) the unit decides it has based on demand and battery state, is a combined figure when both sets of power are connected, or the individual total of the 1-2 cell packs (depending on D-NE model) when running off internal power source.

So it would make purrfect sense to me, logically and from an engineering POV, that if it expects to see internal+ext present or just the internal set present, connecting just the external with internal cells missing, wont meet the circuit conditions the electronics is expecting.

Someone will surely tell a diff story, hopefully they'll actually know how the units are wired for power if they do happen to dispell my theory.

But i think mine will prove to be the case :P

It should work. After all, if that didn't work, the unit couldn't run off of AC either (as the pack also has an AC Port). I know I've ran the unit with depleted gumsticks and without gumsticks in the past.

Just to add extra, I know I've done likewise with few MD units as well...
