hi,

maybe a dumb question but I've to know how SS and the backup Tool is working.I guess that the SS Backup Tool save also the file directory, so that all the backup information is useless if I change the drive letter? on my hdd?!

I've got a new hard disk drive and now I want to copy all my music to this new hard disk drive. After that I will delete my operating system and do a new installation.

my process:

save ss libary with backup tool

copy all my music from old hdd to new hdd

change drive letters, so that the new hdd will get the drive letter from the old hdd and vice versa

format c:

install new OS

install SS

restore ss libary

Anyone habe experience with this? Does my process work? What do you think??

Thx

Marquis

I believe the backup will still be useable even with a newly assigned HDD or drive letter if you will. The backup will be invalid only if you attempt to restore its database onto a second PC. However, to be honest, I rarely utilize the Backup Tool (for reinstallation of SonicStage) as my entire non-DRM ATRAC3plus library resides within an external HDD. If your ATRAC library consists entirely of non-DRM ATRAC tunes, you can even copy those ATRAC tunes as it is onto another removable media and not risk losing its OpenMG contents. Thus, you should not encounter any sort of database problem with your intended plan as outlined above; once again, only if the existing library consists of 100% non-DRM ATRAC tunes. Otherwise, a backup via SonicStage Backup Tool is required.

Naturally, for the peace of mind, I would perform both backup with SonicStage Backup Tool and maintain a hard copy elsewhere if capacity is not an issue. Good luck with your reinstallation.

The drive letter doesn't matter. I have moved my Atrac library form 1 PC to another. Old PC is SS4.0, new PC is SS4.2, both are Asia Pacific version. I backed up my library from the old PC using the backup tool to an external hard-drive, install SS on the new PC, and restore the library from the external hard-drive. SS retains the folder structure, but the drive letter doesn't matter. The only thing is you MUST have an internet connection, as Sonicstage will "verify" your library some server on the internet before restoring for some reason, even if you don't have any tracks purchased from Connect.
