Question

Im looking for a player that supports DivX and there only appears to be only a couple Sony DVD Player on the market that supports this format. I like the idea of having 4 movies on 1 DVD. Rather than fork out for a new player, I was wondering if any tech-heads knew if it was possible to get a normal DVD player chipped to support DivX? I guess if players can be sent off to get multi-region chips installed its a possibility... Is there any such procedure available for DivX upgrades on normal DVD players?

Nope, you cannot just "chip" a plain DVD player to play Divx. It's not that simple, unless you're an advance engineer having access to the electronics components. Sony does have many Divx supporting DVD players, alebit none of them are released in the US. (see my sig).

Compatibility remains a big hurdle for stand-alone DVD players. There is simply no device yet out there that can play ANY divx/Xvid files. Many of them have restrictions in bitrates, no QPEL/GMC support, problems with VBR MP3, etc. Best bet is to just buy a small/mini PC and connect it to your TV.
