Windows Vista & Sony Network Walkman

Question

Is there any way to see my NW-E405 as a USB storage device in Vista just like the way it worked on XP? I just want to run MP3FM from it to transfer some MP3. I don't need and don't want to use SonicStage...

When I connect my NW in the USB port, Vista detects it but doesn't find any drivers. If I try my original Sony CD Vista says INF is invalid. Even tried latest Sony drivers (PA_DRIVER2.EXE from Sony site), even knowing they're not for Vista, and same problems... I installed SonicStage hoping it would install the drivers, but Vista still doesn't find the needed drivers.

Sometimes the NW is detected as "Network Walkman", sometimes as "Unknown device" and sometimes as "SONY NWWM <something else I don't remember>". Most times, even SonicStage doesn't recognize the NW.

Sometimes a new drive letter appears in My Computer, but I cannot access it through Windows Explorer. That's when SonicStage can access it.

Searched everywhere but didn't find any answers... Any ideas?

I'm not sure about specific problems with that specific Network Walkman, but I have troubleshot a lot problems with various USB peripherals over the years.

I experienced a similar problem with my venerable NW-HD5H where Windows (XP in my case at the time) refused to detect the HD5 properly where it had done before. I ended up uninstalling all the USB controllers in "Device Manager" then restarting the machine, this fixed it. This does have the unfortunate consequence of rendering USB keyboard and mice useless until after the reboot, so a PS/2 keyboard is needed, but all the USB peripherals should be redetected after the reboot.

Poor detection of USB peripherals can also caused by dust in the USB plugs or the sockets, I clean them with compressed air. Happens sometimes with my PSP.

You may have dodgy USB controllers, my current Intel board has rock solid reliability for USB, whereas my old nForce 2 was a little bit flaky in regards to USB.
