I hope someone can help me. I am running windows 98 SE and Sonicstage 4.1 CP. My player is a NWS706F. I intalled the program and loaded my music just fine. The player performed great and sounded good but the songs were too unorganized so I spent around 10 hours putting everything in order on "my library". Everything good so far. Here is where the trouble begins.

  • I formatted the player with the onboard format command to erase the songs. Thinking I could save some time from waiting for SS to delete them. (big mistake)
  • I optimized/compressed files in my library
  • When I plugged the player back into the USB I received "cannot update device database"
  • pushed reset button on player just to see if it made a difference. nope
  • still got update device data error
  • Then got an error saying that it can't use "intelligent features". I disabled them trying to get rid of this error.
  • This it said it can't write music onto it because there is music on it from a different format and to delete songs from the menu which I did. (player was empty already)
  • next It said that it couldn't delete all of the songs from the player.
  • Now when I plug it in I get an instant error saying "The connect ACTRAC audio device cannot be used becuase it contains tracks transferred using a transfer method incompatible with this version of SS. Delete songs...Error code 66a3
  • After deleting songs I get error omgjbox which closes the program when you click on it.

It seems that I need the files to update the database on the player? It tried updating them at first but only got to 25% before errors started flying.

I finally got the problem fixed! I installed SS 4.3 on a friends computer and plugged my player into it. It then proceeded in putting some kind of information into the unit for a few minutes. I then took it back to my computer and installed all of my songs with no problem.

I do recommend that you don't use the players built in format command and use the SS software delete songs command instead to avoid this potential problem.

I called Sony about the issue and that was a joke. Don't waste your time. The lady will just play around on the Sony website with you on the phone looking for your problem. She ended up telling me that Windows 98 SE wasn't compatible with the SS program even though I had installed the program and loaded 3.5gigs of music on my player already.
