peacock77
Hi, have been reading as much as I can but can't get my head round what I need to do next. You all seem quite friendly and I wondered if someone could help?I've been running my HD-NW5 on SS3.1 since I got it a couple of years ago. Originally running it from 2 computers (a laptop and a PC) with no problems. Unfortunately I no longer have access to the PC I was using (or the CD's that were loaded onto it - ah the joys of divorce) and the laptop is so out of date (with very little memory and no CD/DVD burner to run backups etc). I recently bought a new PC and resigned myself to the fact that the music already on the player will never make it back to my SS library. My current partner uses an iPod (bless him!!) so we spent many happy hours (not) putting all our current CD's onto the new PC. Last week I downloaded CP4.3 and filled the library up, but when I try and transfer from the Library to the device it asks me to format it as I've been using previous versions (3.1) of SS. Obviously I don't want to do this as (I think) I will lose the 7 or so gigs of music already on there. Am I right in assuming that?In addition the new PC is running Vista and from what I've read CP4.3 is the only version of SS that Vista is compatible with...so, i guess my question is, am I screwed or are there other software programs that I can run on Vista that will "talk to" my NW-HD5 without having to format it and lose what's already on there? Sorry if it's a stupid question but the more I read the more confused I get and I'm losing the will to live.Peacock-x-

If you do an intensive search, it should come up. On a more sober note, you said:My current partner uses an iPod (bless him!!)What?! And you're still together? How? I can barely bring myself to look at my partners Creative Zen Touch without wanting to pull his ears and smack him. . . is this normal? peacock77
Hi JuliCheers for quick reponse... I had ANOTHER look through... but if I'm honest not too far back... think maybe you were referring to the fairly recent posts that pointed to either Realplayer10 - have tried but can't freakin download or MP3FM, which i've downloaded to both PC and crappy laptop and neither will recognise the player....aaaaarrrgh! for some reason the PC is saying that it's on drive J and MP3FM only goes up to drive I.....as you can probably tell I've been trying to sort this out for tooooo long today and have completely lost it for todeay! If anyone can think of anything else to try any suggestions would be welcome but right now I'm mighty tempted to just join the ipod generation!!!can barely bring myself to look at my partners Creative Zen Touch without wanting to pull his ears and smack him. . . is this normal?lmaoI'd say that was pretty normal... in fact it's quite healthy that you're violent towards a real living human whereas I on the other hand am getting very threatening and physical with various bits of inanimate technology...... at least until those lovely people at Sony Helpdesk deign to get back to me......just remembered there's a bottle of wine that needs my attention, if anything comes to anyone, pleeeeeeeease let me know-x-
punit
There really wouldn't be any way or at least one of which I am aware of to be able to put your tracks back on to the computer. The only way which I knew of was using the back up tool and then restoring it. From what I understand Sonicstage uses some kind of an encryption key when transferring songs - or that's what I think - and hence if you did not back it up - I don't think it is possible - my experience anyways. Avrin
I'm afraid there really is no way. The problem is that SS31 applied encryption to all files it ripped, and it was impossible to turn this off. The option to turn encryption off first appeared in SS34, and since SS40 encryption is off by default. So, the only way to upload the tracks is to get access to the original PC.And yes, I understand you very well - I also lost a unique video record after divorce. But stop! Is the laptop able to upload the files from your NW-HD5 into whatever SS it has installed? If yes, then there is a chance. Upload everything, upgrade so SS34, and run the File Conversion Tool with the "Add Copy Protection" checkbox unchecked! Then transfer the files back to the HD-NW5, and after that you may have a chance to upload them to another PC.Heh, there is an even funnier way! Assuming again that your laptop is able to upload, it seems that you may use the NW-HD5 itself for backup purposes. As long as you do not start the main SonicStage program, the unit is seen as a removable drive and may be used for backups with the SonicStage Backup Tool. Just tested this with my RH910. Terence Kelly
Without access to the original laptop you might be out of luck. If you registered the original laptop and your HD with Connect they you could register the new computer to the same Connect account. Then you should be able to move your songs from your HD to the new computer even if they have copy protection.--Terry
