72hundred
Hello,I've a problem. A friend brought his Sony NW-HD1 to me today with laptop to help him put some new music onto the portable device, he needed the help as it turned out as the SonicStage software that Sony uses is truly horrible. So here's the problem; he wiped his PC recently and so went the Sonic Stage from it, and you have to use SonicStage because its the ATRAC format that we're dealing with here. But the NW-HD1 will only work with the version of SonicStage that he was last using, pre-reinstalling XP.Solution: * Does anyone know how I could take the raw data off the portable audio player and convert it back to normal files and songs. At the moment its in the kind of encrypted format that I can't figure out which song is which, much in the same way that audio files look like on an iPod.So there's the problem! If you need more details to help me figure out a solution please post 'em up and I'll do my best to answer. Hopefully we can do something for the guy, I feel for him as the device cost a fortune initially and is a lovely piece of hardware. Apparently so I've heard that when I first installed SonicStage with XP OS it created a unique encryption key and this key allows access to the audio device from SonicStage, but of course I don't have such key now - is there a way around this? Many thanks,72oo Edited August 19, 2008 by 72hundred
Terence Kelly
Well, there are a couple of possibilities. If your friend has a Connect account (the music service is closed but account management is still available, he should reinstall SonicStage on the laptop and register the laptop with his account. Connect will consider it to be a different computer. He will then be able to use his HD1 as before provided it too was also registered. If he never registered the HD1 then he will have to erase all the music on it before he can reconnect it to SS. You can still rescue the files on the HD1 if they were ripped without copy protection. If they were not copy protected you can copy the various folders to the laptop using Windows explorer and then import the files into SS using the import folder option in SS. If the files were copy protected you cannot save them except by making an analog copy in real time. In the future, he should use the Connect account and use the SS backup tool before wiping the system. Sony really went out of their way to copy protect their first HD player. I still think it's the best sounding music player I've ever used, but the copy protection scheme is a PIA.--Terry

Thanks for your detailed reply. As far as I know the files shouldn't be encrypted as they were all direct CD rips. The device was not registered neither to my knowledge. I'm guessing after moving the files back to the PC and then back into SS they should have all their details; track name, album name etc. and that I'll be able to move them back onto the HD1 aso it can sync with the newly installed SS? Terence Kelly
I believe that the files will import with the album and title information intact..at least they have the few times that I have tried it. Since about SS 3.1 there is an option to rip without copy protection. Early versions of SS added the copy protection automatically so you could still be out of luck. For the future, make sure your friend turns off copy protection when ripping his music. You should be able to get the latest version of SS (4.3 for English speakers) here at Atrac Life.--Terry

72hundred
Ended up ripping all the tracks to MP3 and then to SonicStage. So now have a back-up in MP3 form and the audio device is encrypted to one specific machine/OS. Many thanks for help re this problem.
