Newbie question on Line Out and External Speakers (MZ-N1)

Just got a Sony MZ-N1 and whilst its a fantastic player, the number of features it offers and placement of the controls sometimes overwhelms me.

So here is the question. On the manual it says that you can use the earphones/Line Out slot to connect the player to a stereo system or external speakers, but you have to go to the menu system and select AUDIO OUT from the Audio Out parameter. I connected my player to an Audio Out connector WITHOUT setting the correct parameter, but it played anyway. Is this wrong? Will there be a risk of overloading the player when connected to an Audio Out cable without the Audio Out parameter being set? :?

Thanks in advance!

I really doubt any damage would occur - until I get my deck, neither of my MD units had a line-out, even if it is only a headphone-fudge line out...

Anyway, line-out just provides a clean signal designed to be amplified by your equipment, while headphone isn't ment to be amped anymore.

The difference? Headphone out will probably sound slightly worse on speakers than line out.

BTW, you have removed the remote before setting line out? IIRC, you can't use line out with the remote connected.

Not selecting line out definetly positively absolutly will not damage your equipment. If my word isn't good enough for you, then consider that Sony sells the MZ-N707 packaged with a tape adaptor even though the unit doesn't have an audio out, just a standard headphones jack. As Mystyler said, you will probably lose a little audio quality, although through personal experience, you really won't lose any unless you've got really good speakers and ideal listening conditions.

This is all rubbish! the amp will not be damaged at all no mattrer what you plug into it. if you plug the headphone out to the amp just tutn down the volume to 0 on the MD, then turn the volume on the stereo up to the volume u normaly listen to it(low to medium) then turn up your md slowly untill the sound is to your liking!!! line out is uselss, its quite and has no eq or bass bost functionality, i dont know about the sonys but my JVC md plays just GROOVY thorugh the headphone in my car, my home and when im out!

Meansmile, line out is not ment to have an EQ of any kind, is not ment to be loud and is not ment to be variable.

It's purpose is to supply a clean signal to an amp for amplifying and then you select your EQ/bass settings on your receiver unit.
