Hey,

I recently took my n707 w/ soundprofessional's 'T' mic to a fairly loud rock concert, and ofcourse I got horrible sound because it was just too loud.

But, if I want to record my sister playing the piano in a very quiet setting - if she hits a high Ab there is tons of distortion, and it's not even that loud.

My question is this: Will a battery module solve both these problems. And/or will a Preamp do more for me than a batt module. Or which do you think I would rather have to make quality recordings in both settings. Thanks

MZ-N707 w/ SoundProfessional's 'T' Microphone and lots of love for the MD Community.......

I went throught the same situation with my sony 707. The preamp built into the mic imput is crap and no changes to your recording levels will stop the distortion when there is high energy music. I chose the Soundprofessionals preamp (sp-preamp over the battery pac because the preamp has a gain control on the unit. As you know the sony 707 is a pain to set sound recording levels and the preamp I got not only gave me great undistorted sound (through the line input) but also let me change recording levels while recording. More expensive but worth it. The soundprofessional people are really helpfu so give them a call if you are still unsure.

By the way, I also upgraded to their SPCMC-4 pretty high end mics ($160) and they are amazing.

just to make one thing clear: If I want to record a loud concert, is a batbox enough when recording through LINE IN, or do I still need a preamp?

And when recording more quiet sounds a preamp is absolutely necessary when recording through LINE IN?

Oh, and is it possible to use only a preamp through LINE IN combination for recording very loud concerts? The preamp for powering the mic (9vdc)?

There are some on this board who no doubt have more experience than I in this area; but as far as I know the input has no bearing on the type of equipment you need. Line-in, however, is a quieter connection than mic-in, thus liable to give you better quality in your end-product. The batbox is all you need for loud and/or bass-heavy recordings.

I think all the Sound Professionals' stuff is built for a line-in connection (I don't know of any that use mic-in). A preamp basically does for quiet sounds what a battbox does for louder sounds; namely, it boosts the range of the mic.

As far as I know you don't use preamps for recording loud events.
