Because there isn't anywhere under the news section yet to discuss this, what does everyone think of the new NetMD units?

My personal opinion is that 3 of the 5 are a rip off. They don't really have anything over their older netmd counterparts, do they? The two that are damn cool are the MZ-N10 (tons of functions over the N1 such as rehersal mode, speed control, 6 band equalizer, etc) and the one with the radio for people who want netmd and a radio. Other than that, it looks to me like sony changed thebutton layouts and casing of the 505 and 707 and included newer crappy software.

Did I read over something and miss a new function?

The new units do look a lot cooler though...

I though this was interesting, in the machine translation of the Sony press release, just above the Net MD units:

CD Walkman which corresponds to reproduction of ATRAC3 plus

The CD Walkman that the reproduction of MP3, ATRAC3, and ATRAC3 plus besides music CD is possible was announced by seven kinds. ?gSonicStage simple burner application" is (*bandoru*)ed as an encoder and CD lighting software of ATRAC3 plus. About 120 dollars in 100 dollars and DNE-718CK in 200 dollars and high-ranking models DNF-710 in top-end model DNE-1 of the sale schedule are scheduled in May this year. The one that the reproduction of ATRAC3 is possible is the first though the CD Walkman which can reproduce MP3 has already been put on the market.

Difficult to decipher, but I like the idea of storing ATRAC files on CD, and being able to play them there. Of course I suppose there will be hindering checking in and out of files as per NetMD, but I look forward to seeing something in real English one day.

A snippet

ATRAC3plus format is a high-quality audio compression technology developed by Sony that effectively reduces the size of audio files while preserving more of the sound quality.

With ATRAC3plus compression, more audio files can be burned to a disc using a PC CD-ROM drive. Music can be burned and compressed to 132, 105, 66, 64 or 48 kbps (kilobits per second), allowing consumers to store more music or record at higher fidelity. By compressing at 48 kbps, users can enjoy around 490 songs on one disc.

Doesn't look like SP will be suppoted - anyone for 500 muddy songs at 48kbps?

I was looking at the images of the new units, and i noticed that the MZ-N510CK has 'type R' written in red on the body, while the blue MZ-NF610 (which apparently shares the same body design), has 'type S' on it.

the latter has also a much cooler remote: one that shows song titles at least! wink.gif

I wouldn't expect SP to end up having anything to do with a computer (except for a drive). While it is technically possible, Sony are a bit protective of it. SP and LP are very different in the way they work and I'm not aware of any codecs available which will work with ATRAC (as opposed to ATRAC3 for LP2/LP4). I am confident that codecs will appear for ATRACplus. Why Sony are being so protective of ATRAC I'm unsure, but it does work pretty well compared to many other compression things, so perhaps they are afraid that people will steal it... personally, I can't see that happening, but I'm not Sony smile.gif

It's nice to see that the official US release of the N10 is coming soon and that they're not leaving the US MD market soon. Though more non-portable equipment would be great too (more decks, boombox systems, mini-shelf, etc.) *sigh*

I showed my N10 portable to to my boss and he was impressed by the size and design of the unit. Of course, he's a Mac user and iPod owner so it's a tough sell for him. On top of that, no Mac software available yet (if ever). They really need to work on that... anyone know whether or not the RealOne player for OS X would even support downloading to a NetMD device? Guessing not due to lack of OS drivers, but ya never know..
