ATRAC 3.5 is very old. ATRAC DSP Type-S is the newest version of ATRAC from Sony.

If by "pocket discman" you mean "portable MiniDisc Walkman" then pretty much everything is under $400 (if you are in US) even the most recent units. For example, the current top-of-the-line unit from Sony, MZ-N10, can be bought for $340-$350 (delivered) without much of shopping around. Sharp MD-DR7 can be bought for under $300 (delivered). And Panasonic SJ-MR250 sells for about $310 (delivered).

by the way some top end minidiscs like hbb partadisc use atrac 4.5

So what? ATRAC 4.5 was great in 1998 but it was 5 years ago.

And I wouldn't call HHB MDP-500 "top end", it's just a piece of professional equipment. It doesn't even support MDLP.

Any recent Sharp unit with a mic in (I assume) would be suitable for the task. ATRAC 3.5 is an older version, and since then we have seen ATRAC 4, 4.5, R and now S. (S only helps on the playback side of MDLP discs, not the encoding).

Sharps use an equivalent to 4.5/Type-R, so you'll have no problems.

Some models to checkout: (All Sharp)

MD-MT190

MD-MT770/888

IM-MT880/899

MD-DR7
