Grab a recorder and wait for a silent moment. Push record.

Our experience of silence is not the absence of all sounds, but rather a constant background noise. Therefore don’t record in a sound-proof room. Noises bring attention to silence.

I'd like to hear what your silence sounds like.

Send mp3s, compressed to 192Kbps. Note the exact date, time, and geographic location of the recording. Submitting a recording means that you agree to other people downloading it and using it free of charge.

Aim of the society is to

- - - - - -

increase the awareness of the fact that noise is a form of pollution which endangers ecosystems as well as human health

- - - -

improve the communication and co-operation between persons interested in silence

-

act as an interdisciplinary institution, world-wide, to disseminate quality recordings of silence and related projects

RRRRRRRRRRiiiiiiiiiiiiiggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhttttttt.....

Why are you posting this on an md forum?

I agree with you that true silence is hard to find and is very valuble, and I can understand how it can be seen as a type of pollution...but dangerous to ecosystems, like trees aren't going to grow as well because they can hear an airplane in the sky? What's the point of sending recordings of nothing to someone? When I don't type, I hear silence...and I mean silence, I don't hear a heater or an ac unit and my comp turned off the fan and the hard drive cause I'm not using it so I don't even hear that...

Naw dude I understand exactly what the guys is saying, although i think it is a little silly...I define silence as absence of sound, and because I hear the loud hum of my g/f's computer right now, I wouldn't say I am experiencing silence. However, last night when i was babysitting and I finished getting the kids to bed, there was near perfect silence. I'm not sure it is as rare as some people might think...unless they live in the middle of a huge city or something, in which case there will never ever ever ever ever ever be silence there. So yes, you understood, and so did I, I just think it is a silly concept to record silence for people and send it in. My md probably wouldn't be able to pick up the sound of the computer next to me either and I'd get a recording that sounds like there is nothing plugged in to the md. i dunno, maybe I'm more used to silence than most...
