Q about power converter for use on UK md deck in USA??

I want to import the Sony JS980 md deck from UK to USA. I checked out the power converter at Radio Shack: 40 watts, two prong.

the Radio Shack salesman said he doubted that the converter was intended for continuous long term use !!!

Is this possible? If there is no way of permanently using the converter, I don't want to buy the UK unit!

Can anyone give me some help here? thanx.. Tom
