Sony MD to PC

I realize that questions have been asked on this discussion board previously, but I have a really basic question. I recently bought a Sony MZ-R50. It records just great. I have a good laptop computer, but I'm really unfamiliar with audio hardware and software. My MD has an optical cable. What do I need to get the audio to my PC? What hardware am I looking for on my PC? What software will I need. Can any of this be done for free? I'm just looking for a way to record simple recordings of readings for my mother-in-law because of her sight problems. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know too much either, but you should be sure that your laptop even has a sound card in the first place. I don't think it's a given that it will.

If it does then you want to look for a simple miniplug (size of a headphone plug) input on the laptop and forge about the optical cable. The optical cable is for digitally transferring music to your MD from an optical out source. You can plug the minijack into the line out on the MD and play it into the laptop. Of course, at this point you'll need some sort of software to record the sound entering the PC. I'm not sure if there's anything free out there (but there probably is). In my case I've been using the recording software that came with the Sound Blaster Live soundcard on my computer.

Hope this was of some help.

most modern laptops have a soundcard. however, many do not have a line in. just check: there should be a headphone port, mic port and if you have a third one, its usually the line in. You can use the mic in, but it will be in mono.

you'll need a 3.5mm stereo male to male cable - and follow the above instructions.

a good freeware program is Audacity

I wanted to know if it is possible to transfer tracks from my MZN505 or MZN707 to my PC using the USB link? If the hook up is the line in via the sound card, is the recording going from digital (MD) to analog and back to digital (PC) stored in the HD?

Is there a faster and more efficient way of transfering instead of recording onto the PC in real time?
