Greetings All -

My original deck - a Sony MDS-JE320 - just died. The transport siezed.

Looking on e-bay for a used replacement, I see a number of 510s and 520s and I might have assumed (given the higher numbers) that these are newer models then my 320. But I just read something that suggests otherwise.

Are these good decks? My use is mainly to assemble compilations for home and car listening. If both are available, which should I buy - the 510 or the 520? What are the differences?

Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

The first digit is the (hundreds) is the "quality group" of the unit (budget, mid, high-end). The second digit is the "place in evolution chain". So 510 is a mid-level but older than budget 320.

Actually there is a 320 on eBay right now

or you can get a new 470 from JandR for $179.99 + shipping.

I think it's worth it to go for a 520 instead of a 510. I have both and beliee I can hear a difference in quality. The 470 mentioned will have atrac type R in slow play recording which should be a little better than the atrac 4.5 in the 520, but I have no complaints about the 4.5.

Also, when you get into mid level decks you will gain an optical out which the 3xx and (i believe) the 4xx decks do not have. I won't get a deck without it as I often make duplicate md's for myself and my buddy. With an optical out going to another home deck or a portable recorder you can make 2 optical copies simultaneously which I find really handy.

just some thoughts, hopefully you will find something helpful.
