LP2 mode for LIVE recording...

I've heard a lot of complaints about LP2 mode. I can understand how it might affect quality when you're copying from a studio quality CD. My question is, how much difference does it make when making a live stealth recording? I've heard some pretty incredible sounding live TOOL shows (definitely a non-taper friendly band) that I believe were recorded in LP2 mode. Could they have been noticibly different if recorded in SP mode? I'm currently upgrading my entire taping rig but if LP2 mode is that bad then I'll just keep my MZ-R55 which has served me well for several years.

I can't say for sure whether you'll be able to tell the difference between LP2 and SP. That's up to you.

But, I advise you to use SP anyway. Because... even if you can't tell the difference between a fresh LP2 recording and a fresh SP recording, the SP recording may sound better to you than the LP2 version if you do some editing afterwards.

(This is because, like MP3, WMA, etc., Minidisc uses "lossy" audio compression, and imperfections caused by lossy encoding that aren't audible when played back normally may become audible when the sound is edited, or when a DSP or EQ is applied.)

If you've waited this long, you might as well wait for Hi-MD and uncompressed raw PCM. That should be a real quality leap, and uploadable too!

FWIW, I've used LP2 for plenty of live recordings, and I've got no complaints. Mics, mic placement and not sitting next to a bunch of drunks are much more crucial.

There's a glimmer of difference between SP and LP2, but not that much in my experience. .

The best thing about LP2 is that you can get through an entire show without changing the disc, which is a great advantage if you're being stealthy. Unfortunately, LP4 is still a no-go.

The other advantage to the newer machines is that the basic ATRAC encoding improves with Type R and Type S.
