booyakafunk Posted February 8, 2003 Report Share Posted February 8, 2003 LINE IN recording - Help i've been bought a MT180 SHARP for Christmas and i want to use it for recording my Reggae stuff and to record African Drum...Can any of you cyber wizards help, i don't know what mic to use or if i need a pre amp for the Mic first. I'm in the Uk. I was under the impression that preamps were only really needed for recording quiet sounds, and that the battery module (with or without bass rolloff) is all you need for loud events? It makes sense though - I've tried recording with a battery powered mic via line in, and got really quite results, even from loud sources. If a mic needs a batery or phantom power is cause its a condenser mic, so it need to feed the condensor to work. Anyway line levels and mic levels are very different. The line levels are 1,22v and the mic may vary from 20-60mv (mini volts) thats way u need a preamp to get the right levels. I dont know what sony mic u talk about but a shure SM57 would be fine for drum sounds (there are betters of course but at really higher prices). And u can get a cheap mixer, may be a behringer (i know someones hate them, may be PROFESSIONAL musicians, but u cant get a better thing for that price, check the new UB models).
