MZ-R91 Recording Problems

Hi there guys smile.gif First time here!

I've had my Sony MZ-R91 MD for a while now but only recently began to use it to record MD's.

I've got a major problem with it though: Everytime I record a CD to my MD (either through my computer or my personal CD player or my HiFi) the MD records the whole CD as ONE track as opposed to [for example] the 18 individual tracks that it should be. I've tried it on several blank MD's but i get the same problem. Once the MD has finished, I can listen to the music on my MD but as one whole track and so I can't skip forward or anything sad.gif

What am I doing wrong [if anything]...what can I do to make it record properly?

BTW, I should let you know that the sony power charger clapped out on me and so I'm using the 'AA' (1.5v) battery attachment to listen and record my MDs. Does that make a difference?

Please help! Its driving me mad! Thanx for reading and for any help offered!

Mo

1. Whether you're using the battery or AC adapter should not make a difference. I'd suggest getting a replacement AC adapter though, 'cause recording uses a lot more power than playback, and your battery might run out of juice in the middle of one of your recordings.

2. As far as your recordings turning up as one long track... You must be recording in analog. A digital recording will put the track marks in automatically, but analog won't. (Think of it as a tape recorder. Recording in analog just records the sound.)

To put the track marks in, you'll have to either go back and edit the disk, adding the tracks marks (find the spot and use the DIVIDE function to make a new track). Or next time you record, turn on the auto-trackmark function. It may not put in all the track marks -- it looks for a two-second gap and puts a track mark there -- but it should put in the majority of track marks correctly.

I'd recommend getting a CD player with optical digital out and use the TOSLINK cable that came with your R91 to record digitally. Hassle free and best audio quality! smile.gif

Er, yeah, thanx "guest" for your 'help'...I've read the manual and there's nothing in there about my query...hence my being on this site....

Thanx Doojiggy for your advice...makes sense now. The first ever MD i recorded was through my pc's sound card and using a 3.5m jack to jack lead (don't know the proper term for it). I'll see if the auto-track marking will work, if not then i'll look round for some decent cd player with optical digital outputs...

thanx again...great help and great site! smile.gif

BTW, I'm goldustmo as "guest" in the initial post..that's coz i didn't register! DUH! wink.gif

page 14

Right, Guest read page 14 very carefully. Down the Analog column where it refers to Recorded Track Numbers it states:

"Marked Automatically

[*]after more than 2 seconds of blank or low-level segment

[*]when the recorder is paused while recording

Point 1: The CD I was recording from had 3 seconds of blank - I know this coz I burned the CD myself and always leave 3 secs of blank space as opposed to the basic 2 secs.

Point 2: It also states that some track marks maybe recorded incorrectly using the Digital cable...no reference to analog is made. Maybe it's just me...but I'm not too up on Minidisc and I did say this in my initial post. Call me a newbie when it comes to Minidisc, but please don't insult my intelligence.

Mo man, is the three seconds of silence between tracks really "silent", or do you get a bit of analogue hiss/crackle? This can trip up units trying to sync from analogue sources, especially Sonys. The noise could come from the CD itself, or the line output you use to record from.

Have you flipped sync rec on? Or is that only for digital recordings? I'm not sure with this, Sony units are too complex for me. biggrin.gif Try it anyway if you haven't. Anyway, that's sure to be in the manual, but I'm not going to quote any page numbers, because I don't know.

And get a new AC adapter - they are very handy to have.

Hey mysyler, hows it going?

Well, on the CD the 3 secs are pure silence....but i don't know if the cd player emitts any noise that could trip the MD into thinking it's part of the track. Good point though Mystyler....

Yeah the sync rec is for digital rec only...tried with analog and it doesn't initiate

I'm gonna get myself an AC adaptor from dabs.com...it's only £20 (dunno in Aus $ or US $) and it's the only place that sells them in the UK!!!

Cheers for your help mate smile.gif

Hey mo, all good this way. smile.gif

That is the only thing I can think of - it is common in analogue recording. This happens on ALL CDs, not just burnt ones?

I don't think anything is wrong with your unit, it's probably just the noise being generated by your soundcard/CD player's out. Perhaps the best way to check is if you can get your hands on some decent 'phones and listen to the CD during the three seconds of silence.

Have fun dividing tracks in the meantime. biggrin.gif
