MZ-R30 Flashing 'TOC EDIT' & Unable to Record

Can anyone help me with this annoying problem: the machine is second hand & new to me! As a player it's fine.

It records ok from the Mic through 'Mic in & Line in' but trying to record a CD using an Optical lead or an Analogue input cause's the following: recognition of input ('Optical' or 'Line'), small 'rec' symbol, record level indicator, track counter '001' & time counter which gets to 9 seconds then 11 then back to 9 then 10 then 9 and so on until the 'recording' stops and the LCD flashing message 'TOC EDIT' appears pressing 'Stop' isn't acknowledged only pulling the power supply out 'Stops' the machine.

During this 'recording' time the machine makes a 'heavy mechanical clicking' sound i.e not a healthy one!

I've tried the following:

using 3 differnt makes of MD,

trying to Record again after reinserting the power lead, with & without having ejected the MD

I'm a bit lost as what to try next??

Any ideas?
