Guest Anonymous
Please help me! I have been back and forth between MD players and MP3 players. When I've decided on one, a friend will convince me to buy the other! I've been looking at either a Sony 505 or N1 as my choice MD players, and possibly iRiver iFP-190 as my mp3 choice. The reason I am looking for portable audio is because I will be starting to take the bus to school this coming summer. I will be using the player for the commute and for working out. I want a machine that can easily play my mp3's (downloaded and ripped). I will not be using the player to record things. It seems the iRiver unit can do what an MD player can: it records voice/radio, plays FM (which actually the MD can't do), has 256mb storage (which is 200-250minutes of music and is enough for me), about 14 hr battery life. The iRiver is about $200US, which is in between the price of 505 and N1. The only slight advantage an MD player seems to have is removable media. I'm asking for your expert help to see if there are any advantages an MD has that I have overlooked. TIA. )
Guest Anonymous
Another question  , can the MD players read chinese characters?
Guest Anonymous
No, you got it down. I think if you're not going to record, and are mostly interested in listening to your MP3 collection, it's smarter to get an MP3 player than an MD. Then again, I see an MD player selling for $65 + shipping at http://www.ubid.com/actn/opn/getpage.asp?A...ctionId=8456104 .
Sugo
I have been through that before. One major advantage of MD over flash based mp3 players is that you can swap MiniDiscs instead of re-downloading your songs. MiniDiscs are cheap so you can buy on demand. I though re-downloading was ok but turned out to be a pain. With MD you can carry several MiniDiscs with you and change your tune in 5 seconds without hooking up to a computer on the go. Transferring mp3s from computer to MD can be done with netmd. But be warned that some people find netmd very difficult to use. I use sonicstage and got it working the first time. However, you might find downloading mp3 files straight to mp3 players easier. Sound quality and battery life (>30 hours) are also superior to iriver. But if all these are not your concerns, iriver does make solid mp3 players. For starter, I think sony n505 is a great value unit with netmd ($83 shipped from ubid.com). IMO, a n505 plus a decent player (e.g. sharp ds5) is a better deal than sony N1, especially if you don't do much live recording. One good thing about N1 is that the remote can display kanji (you have to translate big5 to JIS if you are dealing with real chinese).
