I have read a good number of posts about NetMD problems, but nobody appears to have the same problem as I do with my N10. My N10 doesn't seem to want to be NetMD capable all the time. On battery power, with the USB cable connected the PC detects it sometimes, however on mains always and battery the rest of the time it's not detected or gives Windows (XP) a device ID (USBVID_0000&PID_0000... as opposed to USBVID_054C&PID_00C6...) which seems to correspond to an unknown device which device manager hides.

Even when the N10 is detected downloading is not possible since anything that seems to stress the connection results in the connection being lost.

I have uninstalled and then reinstalled Sonicstage and the NetMD driver to no avail, however I do not believe it is the fault of the software.

Other things I've tried:

On other computers with different USB controllers.

Switching off the built-in battery

Charging through the battery case

Thanks for reading

That's a crazy problem! Thanks for searching for a solution before posting. When you tried your N10 on other computers, did it work? If it did, then something is wrong with the settings on your PC. However, if it didn't work, then it sounds like you might have a faulty MD unit. It might have some weird USB power settings that are messing up how it links to the computer, hence why you get different results using different power supplies.

Two more questions...why did you charge the internal battery via the battery case? I wouldn't think that would make a difference...

Oh, and when you turned the internal battery off, would your netmd unit power up at all? Mine won't; I think turning off the internal battery just cuts the circuit entirely.

First of all thank you for replying.

To answer your questions, no it didn't work on the other computers. I tried the N10 on a number of different computers (most importantly having differing on-board USB controllers) in the belief that the USB controller of my computer could be at fault (2 years old you see), or an issue with that specific make or type of controller. However it is simply not reported on any of them. It's not even reported on my new nForce2 which is the only USB 2.0 board I've tried it on.

Why did I try charging it via the battery case? Well I didn't think it would make much difference either, but I was experimenting.

To answer your last question: on my N10 also, when the internal battery is off it doesn't power up at all, not even on the cradle.

A week on, the NetMD barely works at all now, I had hoped it was some weird condition with the internal battery that could be resolved with some "trick" or fix (I had a Discman that would skip all the with ESP on with one sony rechargable battery but not with another seemingly identical sony rechargable battery, didn't matter which CD). Hopes of finding such a fix have all but faded, I just going to have to get it repaired.

Thanks
