Sounds like you've been bitten by the all too common Sony MD recording bugdesign flaw, I have an MZ-R90 that exhibits the same behaviour.

Investigations into the problem have led me to believe that the problem occurs for one of three reasons (and mainly involves Sony units):

1 Misaligned recording head (or some component on the recording head is shot)

2 Weakening laser

3 Dirty recording head

Given the MZ-N1 is a relatively new unit, I'd guess that you have dropped this unit at one stage, if you have, then you have a misaligned recording head, unfortunately, I have heard this is expensive to fix.

If you have not dropped the unit, then your problem is either 2 or 3 above. The cheapest thing you can do to try and fix this problem is run an MD head cleaning kit over it.

If the head cleaner fixes your problem, then your in luck, otherwise, I would say you have a weak laser, again, expensive to replace.

But I am NO EXPERT, and therefore, could be wrong, your best off doing further investigation yourself but I think the above should provide you with a starting point for your investigation.

Hope it helps and good luck.
