Guest Anonymous
Hi all, So glad to find this site and the MiniDisc newsgroup yesterday. I've had my Sony for about a year and have really enjoyed recording ambient urban and rural audio, along with various foley/music/bootlegging projects along the way. :?: :!: :x My problems began the last time I attempted to use it to record some pre-production work on an film project, painting a costume. The battery had probably been charging for about 3 hours, and was by no means drained before. After about 10 minutes of letting it run (I was not monitoring it during this time), I stopped it, and jacked it into my sound system to see what kind of results I was getting. After about a minute, there was a whirring sound in the recording, and this continued at about each subsequent minute thereafter, like the mechanism to spin the disk had reset and restarted. None of the recording was lost, but the sound was overlayed with the whirring. I could repro this immediately after, and have not tried since. This also occurs when I'm merely playing a MiniDisc, the sound isn't affected, but you can feel the vibration inside. My guess it that this is the battery, but I wanted to lay off the headache and despair of troubleshooting until I had tried to walk in someone else's footsteps? Anyone? Thanks, Jason
Guest Anonymous
Sounds like the laser on the overwrite head is ready to pack up (or has been misaligned), check out this thread for further info. http://forums.minidisc.org/viewtopic.php?t=1623 Not sure how the battery could be related to these problems, but the detail provided in your problem description is a bit vague, so I could be wrong. Mine is recording a faint motor scooter type of noise starting about 8 seconds into the track. It remains constant if i use the AC power supply, if I use the battery it lasts 10 seconds and recurrs every 106 seconds. I've been through a 4 month long ordeal with Sony trying to get it fixed... they seem to be telling me now that it's "normal" and nothing is wrong with it. You can see a view of the waveform of this noise and download an audio file containing an example of the noise along with the conditions necessary to reproduce the problem at: http://www.mountainlake.org/noise
