Battery module? or Pre-amp?

I have the understanding that you can use a battery module to record using line-in, but only for loud sounds.

The microphones that I have are the Sound Professionals SPSM-6 (same elements as their CMC-4). They are extremely sensitive mics.

My question is--what kind of results would I get when using a battery module with these mics to record orchestral type music (using line-in)? Being that the mics are sensitive, I am hoping that I can get away with just using a battery module instead of paying a lot more for a pre-amp. (to give a sensitivity reference, the highest recording level I've used so far is 12 on a Sharp recorder).

I am tired of the quality of the built in pre-amp, I want to get a much higher sound quality.

Thanks in advance for any help!!

I record rock concerts and never used line-in though I have a BB (and SP-CMC8). Maybe that's stupid but I've never found the sound loud enough to use line-in. Some songs are loud but then comes an acoustic one and the level is very low if you use line-in.

But again, I MAY BE WRONG.

I believe an orchestra produces not very loud sound so I'd suggest you order a BB but you use it with mic-in. Then, you will no more use the built in pre-amp you don't like (I think the BB replaces it, doesn't it?). You'll able to test line-in too.

The purpose of a bat box is to power the mics above the relatively low power supplied by a MD pre amp (powered mic input). Providing up to 9v to the mics will allow them to handle much higher sound pressure levels (SPL) without distortion. The bat box is not a pre amp.

The pre amp on most Sony MDs are, I've read and believe, netoriously noisy and that is another reason to use line in for recording. I'm not entirely sure one couldn't do a decent job of recording moderatly loud signals using a BB and line in. Line in with out a BB would be pointless cause the mics need some power to convert the mechanical sound waves to electrical impulses that can be recorded.

The other thing a BB will/could provide is some bass roll off, which helps reduce some of the booming and distortion associated w/low frequency sources at higher volumes.

As to running a BB into the powered mic input... I've not tried it.

This is all I know for sure... I'm still feeling my way along as well.
