Please could you recommend a MiniDisc player which would be suitable for me. I was just going to get a cheapie one off Ebay but after reading a few reviews I have decided that this is a very bad idea!

I need it for recording live Jazz gigs (studio sizes usually between 100 and 500 people) and for recording myself at the piano to help with my technique and also for transcribing.

I thought that I could get a MD with a built in mic but it seems that I need additional mics and battery?

My only requirements are that it is a NetMD with a remote. It seems that Sharp models are good for recording but other than that I have no idea which to go for. Budget is not really a problem but don't want to go too crazy!

Any suggestions would be gratefully received - thanx! laugh.gif

laugh.gif I was also looking at ebay before but I found something like you so I decide to buy a Sony MZ-S1 it about $150 well it better to bid on other people bidding on and the final price average about ~ $60-100+ for the recorder model so I decided to get the new one because it worth it!!

Yes, you need an external mic. Minidisc recorders don't need a battery pack to power the mic, unless you get a cheapy 505 or 510, for instance.

Sonys are the only brand easily available in the US. But, Sharps are a lot better for recording.

NetMD doesn't allow uploading, and downloads music at a quality I think a musician would find unsatisfactory. I wouldn't give this too much consideration.

Various MP3-based recorders are available, or becoming available soon - including the iPod, in the next couple months. In some ways they're better (interoperability with a PC), in some ways they're worse (size, battery longetivity). It's worth keeping the option in mind, though.

Read the FAQs to figure the mic. You probably want a stereo binaural.
