If youre looking for a good all purpose recorder go for the sony mz-n707 it has mdlp and you can change recording levels without pausing the unit. As far as mics I use mics from www.stealthaudio.net they were afordable and sound great their customer service people were helpful too in answering any newbie questions I had.
