Guest Anonymous
I've had home mini disc home units for four years and love it. But I've found the portables very mediocre sound quality and volume. ( I have MZ-R500 & MZ-N707) I find the portables have limited volume and high end. In fact, metal cassette tapes, recorded from my mini disc, then played back on an old sports walkman cassette portable sound much fuller, louder and richer. Any comments appreciated. thanks. Christopher
Sony units haven't been known for their sound quality as of late. If you're a serious audiophile, then I would consider the Sharp DR-7 or the DS8 player. I've heard nothing but good comments about Sharp's 1-bit Auvi line. k
Guest Anonymous
Kurisa: You say, "as of late". Have the Sony portables ever sounded great? Were they once good and went downhill. Both of mine don't sound too hot. Yet, I'm always reluctant to go with anything but Sony. You think the Sharp will have the volume the Sony's lacks? I would love it if you or someone could do some back to back test. thanks for info! Kevs

BJ
Sound-wise, my 10-year-old Sharp MD-D10 blows my N707 out of the water. The JVC XM-R70 has brilliant sound, but lacks volume (I just can't turn the thing up as loud as my N707). Just my 2 cents.
Guest Anonymous
Thanks: I would have never thought that units other than Sony would be better than Sony's. I'll have to find a store with the Sharps and test them out. I hope they have G protection and can take a mike. Any other recommendations or ideas appreciated. Also, does anyone know why the heck the Sony portables don't have good volume/sound? Is Sony aware?? Kevs
Guest Anonymous
Unfortunately, Sharp pulled out of the US MD market. You have to get them from some import company, like minidisco.com or an ebay seller. I think in general, Sony makes low-quality audio products (their stereos and speakers are about as bad as you can get). Definitely, Sharp MDs are much better for mics (to the extent that, if you're ever going to use the mic, it's better to get a Sharp). However, the Sharp MDs I've had have had a hard time with the vibrations, that Sony's don't. About output levels: Europe places limits on headphone output levels, so that at full volume they won't damage listener's ears. Sony probably follows the European voltage output convention for their other markets, too.
Guest Anonymous
trust sony to release a piece of crap known as n10 as their 10th anniversary md model. yes, it has loads of features, but the sound was way too bad. not clear treble, muddy bass. ewww... i sold it after i had it for 2 days. people who say the n10 sounds absolutely fantastic has no idea what great sound means. i use the ety er6, and the n10 simply sounds like crap. i have the sharp dr480 (also known as dr7) and it is the second best sounding portable i have owned. clear treble, great bass. imo, the aiwas made some of the best md recorder. i have the aiwa f80 and the bass were better than the sharps and treble not as jarring as the sharp's (although not by much).
