I am currently starting off with the mz-ne410 and I think it is a very good MD for what I use it for. One thing, I hate Atrac3, I gives me a headache. There is a big downgrade in the sound quality when I listen to the mp3, then the atrac version of a song. There is also alot of wasted space when the bitrate of the mp3 is lower than the set bitrate for atrac. In the manual it says that the MD supports WAV, WMA, MP3. Where is he setting in sonicstage that allows you to write in one of these formats. 'Cause all I can find is the format for when you import it into your library. If there isn't a solution to this problem, is there a reasonable way to somehow boost the quality of the atrac? I don't want answers like, "Your MD is shit, get a new one" I guess while I'm at it, I'll ask this. Any useful hacks for the NE410, or is there even a service menu on it? The reason why your MP3s sound bad is that your compressing an already compressed file so it will not sound better. If you are using LP4 for MP3s it just kills the quality., try LP2 it might be better. Sony advertisments mean it can convert MP3 , WAV, WMA into ATRAC. Trust me ATRAC is a very good compression technology but nothing will make a badly encoded MP3 sound good. So my advice is to record in LP2. or better use a CD that is in WAV (not an MP3 converted into a WAV file) to do ur transfers. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest Anonymous Posted September 10, 2003 Report Share Posted September 10, 2003 That is what I have been doing, I have good quality mp3's, but when I put them on my recorder and listen to them, It sounds terrible and I usually get a headache, its hard to explain what it sound like, but its almost like it only plays high/mid-range sounds. The problem you are having don't sound like they're down to problems with Atrac though - its more likely to be the 410s settings (bass/treble), combined with headphones. My 510s headphones are okay, but if I put my old Aiwa HP-V99s on it, it sounds hugely better. I hate to say it, but you maybe would have been better off spending a little more and getting hold of a 510 or 710 - maybe type S is much better sounding than type R decoding. I'm gonna use mine for a while, and possibly get better headphones. Besides, I want to be able to record music from a friends cd player and stuff, so I will need a better model. You made mention of it being wasteful for atrac to be at a higher bitrate than the original mp3 file, which it is...but if your original mp3 file is smaller than 128 kbps, then there isn't a thing you can do to make it sound better. I personally find any mp3 file below 128 kbps to be generally intolerable, and encoding it to another format isn't going to help. Try starting off with better mp3 files. Also, are you using LP2 or LP4? LP4 (66 kbps) sounds like ass, try LP2 (132 kbps) if you haven't yet. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Also, I think its cause I was using too much treble on my MD, it was only at one, but I think it's the main cause for my headaches. Whats the biggest sony headphones that I could use for my MD, one that the MD will have enough mW for. I don't want to buy a set of headphones and realize that there isn't enough power for them. Because sometimes they can sound failry good through the PC speakers (no matter how good they are) but then with headphones you notice some (if not a lot of) imperfections. But they sound clear, and they aren't as annoying as the no name brand of ear buds. So I think it's something in my md that is causing a major sound degrade. Like I said I messed around with my trable by putting it back to zero when it was at 1 and it sounds alot better.
