Clipping?

Okay, I know when you're doing analog recording, you have to adjust therecording volume to make sure the last bar in the volume inidicator never lights up, because this indicates that the signal is clipping.

Well, I did my first couple of optical dubs today, and I noticed that in some places, the last bar lights up. Is this reason for alarm? (i.e. should I rip my CD's to my computer, attenuate them and burn them to CD-RW for minidisc recording purposes?) Or is this fairly normal and not at all harmful to the sound?

I'm recording with an R500. It doesn't seem to have a digital recording level control (though it does have a control for analog recording)

And my CX355 doesn't seem to have any kind of digital output volume control.

Correction... the R500 doesn't allow you to adjust the RecVol when in Sync mode, but when preparing for an optical recording, if you switch it off of Sync, you can change the RecVol from Auto to Manual, and it will default at 23/30.

The question now is, does the player actually heed the RecVol when doing a sync recording? My guess is "no", but I'm doing a test recording with the RecVol set at 20/30 right now and I'll check for the "over" bar lighting shortly.
