dirtyfunk
Hi, Dutch MD newby here. I'm looking to buy a MD for recording my band at rehearsals and the odd live gig. I have read a lot of your threads here and they have been very helpfull, thanks! I more or less decided on a Sharp MD-MT290, because of it's good reputation for loud live recordings, it's easy to operate and relatively cheap. I know it has a MIC-IN, but what would be the best option for a microphone, say below $150 ??? - what brand? - powered or non-powered? - T-model or ????-model? Any experiences with this MD or other advice would be appreciated!!! Menno Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Guest Anonymous
Ok, I recently made a bootleg of a local band near where I live. It was an acoustic concert, but it was very loud, and had some pretty heavy bass. I was using a Sony MD (don't remember brand... sorry), using the LINE IN (NOT MIC) I build a mic out of radio shack parts, using the instructions here: http://www.minidisc.org/homemade_mics.html And here were the results: http://floater.sytes.net/media/Bootleg2.mp3
Guest Anonymous
If you want to be really cheap and can do very basic soldering I recommend building your own mics. The total cost is less than $10.00 and they have 95% of the sound from anything I've listened to (and bought) for less than $100.00. Using RadioShack electret elements (which have two leads already soldered to them) you just connect them to a stereo cable with a miniplug on one end (follow the directions at this web site). Note that for less than $150.00 you can get good sound, but will have hiss. Reactive Sounds Spider Mics are good ($60.00), and are a little better than my homebuilts, but do not blow them away. Their background hiss is at a higher frequency, and they may be a bit more detailed. The Sony DSP907 is also good, but in my opinion is not worth the money ($100.00). It has hiss just like the cheaper mics. Good luck. I envy your living in Amsterdam, it is one of my most favorite places.
dirtyfunk
Hi, Thanks for your replies! FYI, I did buy the Sharp MD-MT290 and I ordered a pair of binaural stereo microphones and a battery filter module with bass roll-off from MicrophoneMadness. This should take care of all my loud recording needs! And Amsterdam is a fine place to live indeed  Menno
