I've been recording with analog rca cords on home unit MD, for awhile. I think the default for recording is +0.5 is that correct? Sounds good to me. I don't understand it too much.

I'm going to finally getting cd player with optical out (to the MD). Do I still set the recording level, or is that now done automatically/ or dynamically? thanks!

All I can say is, check for yourself on a recording-by-recording basis. There should be a certain level which your recorder's manual should say will cause clipping if exceeded.

I only have experience with the R500 but I can give you an example of how much the ideal recording level can vary... The R500's recording level is a scale of 1 to 30. When recording optically from my CD player, 21 will give loud sound without any distortion. When recording via analogue from the same stereo, 19 is about the highest I dare go. Once, though, a CD of mine required the level to be at 30 to sound reasonably close to the loudness of the other albums.

So, long story short, always check the level when you begin a recording session.
