What does "Linear PCM" truly means?

Hello to ALL minidisc users,

I was VERY surprised and really happy to know that Sony did not abandon the MD format.

The truth is that they "upgraded" several important specs to reach a much younger much enthusiastic target...

Yes I’m talking about young people...

I'm a user since 1995, I only own one portable and a deck MD player/recorder unit:

MZ-R3 (portable)

MDS JB-930 (deck)

For me the beauty of the MD format was ALLWAYS the TRUE possibility to replace the cassette format (that I always hated) even knowing at the time that for me it was the only portable format available.

Regarding sound quality and this is for me the most important aspect of all, I have to say to you all that after testing MDLP I never wanted such a thing. I prefer EXCELENT audio quality, the standard MD spec using ATRAC.

Net MD for me does not matter, I really like to make excellent copies. Transfer rates and even higher compression does not apply to me...

That’s why, after this huge introduction, I would like to know what it is "Linear PCM".

Will we be able to RECORD one CD, using NO compression AT ALL on the new Hi-MD 1 Gb media?

If so, I’m REALLY in ecstasy!!! I thing that on a 1Gb MD disc we will have almost 100 minutes available!!!

If not, what does this spec really mean?

Congratulations to Sony worldwide for believing in the users and supporting the format.

Best regards,

DigitalSound

Linear PCM means, that NO compression takes place.

The data from the A/D-Converter or SP/DIF-Input goes directly to disc without any changes.

That simply means, a digital copy of a CD on Hi-MD is a perfect clone. Down to every single bit.

Thank you JadeClaw,

this represents to me the best and most important news of them all!

I'm sorry to all other users that really enjoy having:

MDLP

LP2

LP4

Net MD

It's great to have all this functionalitiest but it's not, in my option, what metters the most.

For me what metters is the possibility to have uncompressed music on such a small and portable format.

It's also great to have the possibility to storage hundreds of MD's since It takes less space than CD/SACD/DVD-A !

Once again thank you for your explanation.

Best regards,

DigitalSound.

Exactly. Linear PCM sounds great, and is the stuff I'm most interested in. The rest of the specs I couldn't care less for.

I was an early adopter of MiniDisc and DCC years ago, but sold all my stuff years ago after playing with both formats briefly. I loved the editing capabilities and the convenience of MiniDisc, but I just couldn't live with lossy audio compression for anything but casual listening of CDs on the go. I just couldn't use it for original work I was recording.

I'm now interested in the format once more.

The news of linear PCM had me initially jumping for joy, but now has me cautiously optimimstic, simply because I think Sony won't make things that easy. I think they will limit the feature, especially when it comes to copying from CD. It also sounds downplayed in the specs they've released. I still dunno how many minutes we can get in PCM mode, but I'm assuming it's a fair bit more than a 700MB/80min CD.

We'll wait and see. The cost of blank Hi-MDs is high enough that they probably might make the feature unrestricted. But I doubt it.

since I bought my type-s minidisc, I was really surprised how good the quality of LP4 is in it. For me it has always been more important to have lots of ok quality music on one disc than little high quality, so now I'm gonna be able to record over 40 hours of fine-quality music on one disc, that makes me very happy.. I don't see myself record anything with PCM-Linear quality, ever... I never could tell the difference of SP and LP2 anyway... or LP2 to CD-quality for that matter, LP4 is somewhat worse, but it doesn't bother me at all, I just enjoy the music.

Also I love to record manually, so I never needed to use any applications to record high-speed to my MD. As for Hi-MD I can see myself doing lenghty sessions of manual recording for several days per one disc to get it just perfect.
