Guest Anonymous
Hey all, This is my first post on the board so hello everyone. I've been intrigued by MD since I first heard about back in junior high and finally bought one about a month ago. Since I can use portable audio in college and throughout my entire shift at work, I wanted something with quality, capacity, amd compactness. After a little deliberation I settled on an MD player: the NE410. Despite Sonicstage and the headphones, I was suprised at what I got for my money. The more and more I thought about it I started to wish I had sprung for a model with a rechargable, radio, and AC adaptor so I went out and exchanged the NE410 for the NF610. 1. I work in the the dead center of a brick-walled office building and I'm having a little trouble getting stations in clearly. In my apartment I can't get any stations to disort no matter what I do. Is the antenna basically the cord connecting the remote to the MD player or does it also use the headphone cord? Are there any tips/tricks to get a little more sensitivity? 2. What does Type-S mean? 3. I've been looking for some good replacement headphones. I tried some $20 Sony MDR-V150's that sounded great but were just too cumbersome. I was considering either the Elements of Style series or the behind-the-head Street Style series. Earbuds are not for me. Thanks ahead of time for the help! KJ_Palmer
Welcome Guest (why not register otherwise you'll be an eternal 'Guest'?). I hope the following helps. 1. The headphone cable is really the FM antenna for the radio, and there is a built in AM antenna inside the remote. So you could try re-orienting the remote or extending the headphone cord. For better FM reception (but mono) you could try using Mono (or Local) - I think you need to hold the Radio On button for a while. If you can get near a window this might also help. 2. Type S is a decoder built into the ATRAC chip which supposedly improves playback of MDLP recorded tracks compared to previous machines offering MDLP modes. 3. If you don't like earbuds you could try Sennheisser PX100 or PX200 over-ear phones. They'd be quite sensitive (ie. loud) with your 610. I just bought an MZ-NF610 and yeah, the reception is a bit dodgy, especially deep indoors in buildings, malls, etc. But there are places where I can receive FM stations that were, on my other Sony portables, either too weak or were prone to interference from other stations... A mixed bag. If you need radio with a reliable signal at work, you might be better off getting a separate portable radio instead. Also, as far as I can tell, there is no mono/stereo setting. The DX/local setting does help sometimes, though. And if there are any other tips for improving reception, I'd love to hear them.
